16 Years Dancing At Sharon’s
$480.00 Scholarship
Sharon’s has been my second home for as long as I can remember. From a young age, all I wanted was to be with my friends dancing. I took almost every class offered in order to have
extra hours at the studio. Ballet, tap, jazz, Irish step, and hip hop were just some of the classes I
attempted. As I got older and had more experience with each style I found my favorites: modern
and contemporary. They were so different from anything I had previously done and I enjoyed
exploring new movements. After many years of rec classes, I joined the performing group. I
enjoyed learning different dances throughout the year and being able to perform them in new and fun environments. Performing group increased my love performing and strengthened my
technique. In 6th grade, I decided I wanted to do more, so I tried out for the competition team.
That was the best decision I think I have ever made. Not only did I fulfill my need to dance, but I
was surrounded by people who became family. My teammates are my best friends in and out of
dance. I cannot imagine my life without these girls who have been with me through everything. I
have learned many lessons and have countless memories that I will never forget. My teammates and my teachers have definitely shaped me into the person I am today.
Unfortunately, being the clumsy person I am, I have encountered numerous injuries. Each one
taking me out of dance for much longer than I would have liked. Many doctors told me that I
wasn’t allowed to come back to dance, but that made me even more determined to get back into
it. I knew that I needed dance. From each injury, I came back and got to do what I loved again.
Next fall, I will be attending Rutgers in the pharmacy program. I hope to continue
dancing in some capacity throughout college. Dance will always be a part of me and I can wholeheartedly thank Sharon’s for that.
