Understanding Dance Terminology: Key Terms Every Dancer Should Know

Updated: 1 day ago

Welcome to Sharon's Studio of Dance & Music! Whether you’re new to dance or have been practicing for a while, knowing some basic dance terms can make your classes more enjoyable and easier to follow. Here’s a guide to some essential dance terms that will help you understand what’s happening in class and improve your skills.

1. Barre

In ballet, the barre is a handrail used for support during warm-ups and exercises. It helps dancers maintain balance and proper form.

2. Pirouette

A pirouette is a spinning move performed on one foot. It’s a fundamental turn in ballet that requires balance and precision.

3. Plie

A plié is a bending of the knees while keeping the feet flat on the floor. It’s a basic ballet move that helps build strength and flexibility in the legs.

4. Chassé

Chassé means "to chase." It’s a step where one foot literally chases the other, often used to move smoothly from one position to another.

5. Jeté

A jeté is a leap where the dancer jumps from one foot and lands on the other, usually with one leg extended in the air.

6. Tendu

Tendu means "stretched." It refers to extending your leg and foot along the floor while keeping your toes pointed, which helps with flexibility and control.

7. Demi-Pointe

Demi-pointe is when you stand on the balls of your feet without lifting your heels completely off the ground. It’s used to build strength in the feet and ankles.

8. Isolation

Isolation is a technique used in various dance styles where you move specific parts of your body independently. This helps create distinct movements and accents.

9. Adagio

Adagio means "slow." It involves slow, controlled movements in ballet that focus on stretching and holding positions.

10. Allegro

Allegro means "fast." It includes quick, lively movements in ballet, such as jumps and fast footwork.

By familiarizing yourself with these basic dance terms, you’ll be better equipped to understand instructions and fully engage in your classes at Sharon's Studio. If you have any questions or need more explanations, don’t hesitate to ask us. We’re here to support you on your dance journey!
